You nailed it, Betty. This is the man claimed to be Andrew Giles Potter. Dark Union claims he died in an auto accident in 1932. I believe(?) it was Potter whose investigation determined JWB died in India in 1883.

He looks fairly young to be the Andrew Potter who served with Laf Baker.  He was born in 1840.   Do you know when the photo was taken?  Based on the clothing style I would have guessed the  1910-1920's?

In the Neff Guttrige Collection there is a letter (Letter to Mrs Robert Riggs)  which indicates there is more than one person with the name of Andrew G Potter.  In Steers article Dark Union - Bad History, he shows 3 photos from this collection of apparently different men named Andrew Potter.   I wasn't sure what point Steers was trying to make of this

I am not defending Neff.  Haven't even read his book yet.  I have heard that this is a large collection of material.  Only a small part of it is online.  If he has anything of substance, it is mixed in with a lot of junk.  What little I have read that is online, is to me, mainly junk.  Interesting, but still junk.   With the apparent lack of credibility in the material of this collection, it would be difficult to prove some new truth mixed in with so much fabrication.

I am not totally sure, but one guess might be it was the authors showing their doubts for the Potter claims.

Another historian who is extremely skeptical of the claims in Dark Union is James M. McPherson. His article is here.

That's what I thought - the clothing is definitely from the 1910's to the 1920's era....if he were born in 1840, of course, he'd be an old man by this time!  This guy seems to be in his mid 20's to 30's.....another reason to be very, very leery of the Potter Papers in my estimation....

The picture caption in Dark Union says "Andrew Giles Potter in retirement."

Constantino Brumidi painted  "The Apotheosis of  Washington," in 1865, in the Capitol Dome in the Rotunda, and it has a "connection" of sorts, with the assassination. What is it?

Since you said "of sorts," I will take a shot. One panel shows 13 maidens attending Washington. Six have their backs turned. They are suppose to symbolize the states that seceeded.

We had this once before (a long time ago), and it had something to do with one of the actresses whose picture was found in Booth's wallet.  However, I have forgotten the connection.

Correct Roger. It was Effie Germon.

Thanks. I had a vague memory of this, either here or on the defunct Snellers' mailbag.

Effie lived on Race Street in Phil. down the block from Asia. After John had been killed, Effie wrote a letter to Asia offering her assistance saying she knew John well having acted with him. Effie's house is now gone. It has been replaced with a parking lot.

Effie was the model used by her brother-in-law, Brumidi. She was performing in Aladdin at Grover's Theatre in Washington, D.C., on the evening when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre. While she was singing "Sherman Has Marched To The Sea", C.D. Hess, manager of Grover's Theatre, learned of the shooting of Lincoln. A few days earlier Germon was present when  Booth came into the office of Hess and inquired as to when Lincoln would attend a performance of Aladdin. The President had been invited and had promised to attend. A photo of Germon was found on Booth when he was killed at Richard H. Garrett's farm.

Yep, and he's told me this story numerous times. I'd hate to challenge him on "Jeopardy", regarding the assassination!
